Lessons Learnt from Northwick Park

Royal College of Midwives

Anna Averkiou chaired a session about handling the media at the Royal College of Midwives Legal Birth Conference 2012.

The "In Conversation With..." format focused on the experience and lessons learnt at Northwick Park Hospital, which came under intense scrutiny following the deaths of ten women who gave birth at the North London hospital's maternity unit in 2006.

North West London Hospitals NHS Trust's Colette Mannion, Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology, and Pamela Mellor, Supervisor of Midwives and Maternity Risk Manager, discussed how they overcame some of the challenges they faced and what positive aspects have been achieved.

They admitted to feeling daunted by the media interest and also frustrated at being unable to respond to some of the allegations in the press whilst the enquiries were continuing.

Bond SolonNearly 250 midwives attended the event at SOAS in London. Organised by legal training company, Bond Solon, this was the fourth annual conference exploring the current legal issues and challenges facing healthcare professionals involved in providing maternity care. Delgates also gain an insight into how to work authoritatively within the law.
